Title: My dream is to die.
Artist: Martin Weber
This is my favorite picture from Martin Weber's Silver Eye collection. The picture portays a young man from a hispanic country. He is shown without a shirt, exposing what looks like bullet and knife wounds. Behind him is a cement wall which appears battered and chipped. On his blackboard he writes "My dream is to die."
This picture strikes me because it's odd to come across an individual who dreams of death. We are used to thinking about dreams as positive, optimistic desires. It makes an individual wonder about why an individual would want to die. Some options would be that he's gone through a lot of pain, struggle, and suffering where death appears to be the best option. Another option would be that he has fought for a good cause or even his country and wishes to die for his country or as a man.
In conclusion, all of Martin's photographs assume mystery but this picture gives you but so many clues and leaves the rest to imagination.
